2009 - Arizona NST
The 800-mile Arizonal NST was explored and laid out by a teacher from Flagstaff, Dale Shewalter, in 1985. He aimed to create a primitive trail for hiking, horseback riders, mountain biking and even cross country skiing, showcasing the wide variety of mountain ranges and ecosystems in the backcountry of Arizona. The Arizona NST crosses the entire state from north to south, connects five mountain ranges, and crosses the Grand Canyon just east of Grand Canyon Village. Along the way it traverses four national parks and four national forests. Construction of the trail was completed in 2011 just before national designation was sought. This Trail is administered by the Forst Service in close cooperation with the Arizona Trail Association.
